Roof leak? What to do first.

Right now

1. Put a bucket under the drip and move valuables.
2. If the ceiling is bulging with water, poke a small hole in the center to let it drain into the bucket — this prevents a bigger collapse.
3. Take photos.
4. Call a roofer for an emergency tarp if rain is still coming.

Finding the real source

Water travels along rafters and decking, so the stain is often feet away from the actual hole. The most common sources are pipe boots, flashing at walls and chimneys, valleys and missing shingles.
