SOLAR DETACH & RESET · DFW

Solar panel removal and reinstallation for your roof in DFW.

Solar panels and roofs have different lifespans. If your roof needs repair or replacement and you have panels on top of it, the panels have to come off first and go back on after. Done carelessly, that can damage panels, wiring, or the new roof. RezComm Roofing & Construction coordinates solar panel removal and reinstallation as part of roof work for homeowners across Dallas–Fort Worth, so the roof and the solar system are handled as one project.

It starts with a FREE AI drone roof scan and a FREE, no-obligation estimate. If a storm may be involved, you can also get a FREE storm history report for your address.

When solar panels need to come off

  • Roof replacement. Shingles, underlayment, and flashing under the array cannot be replaced with panels in place.
  • Storm damage to roofing under or around the array, which is common after DFW hail and wind.
  • Leaks near the array. Mounting penetrations and the areas around them can leak over time. Finding the source usually means lifting panels. See roof leak detection.
  • Decking repairs in areas covered by panels.

If your roof is getting older and you are thinking about adding solar, it is generally worth having the roof inspected first. Replacing a roof before panels go on can avoid paying to remove and reinstall them a few years later.

Check your solar warranty before work starts

This is the most important step for homeowners, and it is one only you can take. Solar panels, inverters, and installations usually come with warranties from the panel manufacturer and the original installer. Some of those warranties have conditions about who may remove or reinstall the system, and removal by someone other than the original installer may affect coverage.

Before any work begins, we recommend you:

  • Contact your solar provider or installer and ask how removal and reinstallation for roof work affects your panel and workmanship warranties.
  • Ask whether they require or prefer to do the work themselves, or whether they need to be notified.
  • If you lease your system or have a power purchase agreement, check with the leasing company. You may not own the panels, and the contract may have specific requirements.
  • Ask about monitoring. Note how your system is performing before work starts so you can compare afterward.

We are happy to coordinate with your solar provider once you know what they require.

How RezComm coordinates solar detach and reset

  1. Inspect the roof. Our free drone scan covers the whole roof, including around the array, and we follow with a hands-on inspection.
  2. Document the system before removal. We photograph the array layout, mounting, and visible wiring and note the condition of the panels, so there is a clear record of how things looked before work began.
  3. Plan around your solar provider. Based on what your provider requires, we schedule the detach and reset so it fits with the roof work.
  4. Shut down and remove the panels safely. The system is shut down before any disconnection, and panels and racking are removed carefully.
  5. Protect the panels while they are off the roof. Panels are kept somewhere safe, away from foot traffic and debris, for the duration of the roof work.
  6. Complete the roof work. Repair or replacement proceeds as normal, including the area that was under the array.
  7. Flash and seal new mounting points. Penetrations for solar mounts are one of the most common leak sources, so they need to be properly flashed into the new roof.
  8. Reinstall the panels on the racking, reconnect, and confirm the system comes back online.

Roofing under solar in North Texas

Panels shade the roof underneath and give it some protection from hail, but the exposed areas around the array take the full force of DFW storms, heat, and UV. When replacing a roof under solar, it makes sense to choose a roof system that will last as long as you expect the panels to stay up, so you are not removing them again soon.

  • Impact-resistant shingles. On qualifying replacements, RezComm offers a free upgrade to impact-resistant shingles at no cost to you. It is not a rebate, discount, or deductible payment. Some Texas insurers offer premium discounts for impact-resistant roofs; ask your insurer. See impact-resistant shingles.
  • Metal roofing. Some homeowners pair solar with a long-lasting metal roof. See metal roofing.
  • Good flashing details at every mount, which matter more than the shingle brand for preventing leaks.

Solar removal and insurance claims

If your roof replacement is part of a storm claim, removing and reinstalling solar panels is a real cost of doing the roof work, and it should be documented. RezComm photographs the array, includes the detach and reset in our estimate, and meets your adjuster on the roof. Whether it is covered depends on your policy and your insurer's decision.

RezComm does not negotiate or adjust claims; Texas law reserves that for licensed public adjusters. We never promise approval, and Texas law requires you to pay your deductible, which contractors cannot pay or waive. Warranty, insurance, and financing

RezComm's 5-year workmanship warranty covers our roofing work, and new roofing products carry manufacturer warranties of 30 to 50 years depending on the line. Warranties on your solar equipment come from your panel manufacturer and solar installer, which is why we ask you to check with them first. RezComm carries $1,000,000 in general liability coverage through Berkshire Hathaway Direct Insurance Company, with a certificate on request. Financing for roof projects is available through Acorn Finance.

What to expect for timing

A roof with solar takes longer than the same roof without it, because the removal and reinstallation add steps on both ends. Your solar provider's requirements and availability can also affect the schedule. The roof work itself depends on size, material, and weather. Your system will be offline from removal until it is reinstalled and reconnected, so plan for a period without solar production. We give you a realistic schedule once we know the scope and your provider's requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Will removing my solar panels void the warranty?

It depends on your panel manufacturer and installer. Some warranties have conditions about who can remove or reinstall the system. Check with your solar provider before any work starts.

Do I need to remove my solar panels to replace my roof?

Yes. The roofing under the array cannot be replaced properly with panels in place, so they need to be removed and reinstalled.

Where are the panels kept during the roof work?

Panels are kept somewhere safe, away from foot traffic and debris, until the new roof is finished and they can be reinstalled.

Will my system produce power during the roof work?

No. The system is offline from the time it is shut down and removed until it is reinstalled and reconnected.

Should I replace my roof before installing solar?

If your roof is getting older, it is generally smart to have it inspected first. Replacing it before panels go on can avoid a removal and reinstallation later.
